Kazumasa Hachiken (八軒 数正 Hachiken Kazumasa?) is the father of Yūgo Hachiken and Shingo Hachiken and Misako Hachiken's husband.

Personality[]

Kazumasa Hachiken is a very strict and serious man to his wife and his children. He cares for his children and wants them to do their best for themselves, but unfortunately his way of showing it puts lots of unnecessary pressure on them. He is feared because of his looks, mostly his face, which causes many to assume that he's a Yakuza member.

Skills & Abilities[]

Being an office worker, he has a good understanding of some of the inner workings of businesses and how they run. He has been successful in life to the point where he can confidently tell his children they don't need to worry about money, including college expenses. For this reason, Yugo eventually reaches out to him to look over his business plans with the hopes of him becoming an investor and helping financially as well as strategically.

In the same way that he expects from his children, he is very good at studying. His personal office's walls are covered to the point of overflowing with books, and he will not hesitate to add to it for something important like researching animal husbandry.

Unfortunately, he excels in using his words hit people emotionally where they are most vulnerable. He repeatedly is shown berating Yugo with comments that hurt him to his core, because they harshly point out truths he doesn't want to hear. This part of his personality is something that has driven his children away from him. However, eventually he is shown to be self aware of it, holding back from making a comment he knows will hurt Yugo unnecessarily.

Image & Appearance[]

Unlike his son, he has dark brown, backwards styled hair and small, black eyes. Being very serious, he almost never smiles and is often mistaken by a Yakuza. He always wears a blue or black suit, usual for an office worker, a white, long sleeved shirt with collar and a tie. In winter he wears a long coat over his suit. When reading, he is shown wearing reading glasses.

History[]

Prior to the story we don't know anything about the life of Kazumasa Hachiken.

Relationships[]

Yūgo Hachiken[]

Yugo is his second son, and had to follow in the shadow of expectations Shingo set. Kazumasa expected Yugo to do as well in school as Shingo at a minimum, and the pressure created by this caused Yugo to become an even more introverted, scared, and emotionally repressed individual. Yugo had never stood up for himself to his father until after being in high school and starting his development.

Kazumasa has a complex way of caring for Yugo, which was hard to tell under his personality of always taking his actions very seriously. Yugo's failure to get to pass his own exams left a negative mark in his father's eyes and made him distrust any path that didn't involve redeeming himself academically at first. When Yugo first came to him with the idea of a business involving using the strengths his friends showed in agriculture and processing, he took it very seriously and would give harsh criticism. Unbeknownst to Yugo, Kazumasa was taking his business ideas extremely seriously as a potential investor, and as the idea became more sound and possible, he would do plenty of his own research[1] and drop in unannounced to see the natural state of the business[2]. It sank in more with Yugo that the process could work after he got his apartment and talked with Kazumasa more about it, and Aki defended him and asked he believe in Yugo. While not said to Yugo's face, Kazumasa is then quoted saying "If he can show me that he is serious, then I will take him seriously. that is my only requirement."[3] He has even been shown to smile once when Misako mentioned to him that Yugo's bank account balance was increasing from saving and part-time work[4]. Despite his cold exterior and harsh criticism of Yugo, he does care about him.

Misako Hachiken[]

His wife. We don't see any personal interaction between the two of them.

Shingo Hachiken[]

Shingo is his first son. Kazumasa had similar if not equal expectations of Shingo that he eventually has of Yugo, pressuring Shingo to work as hard as he can to get into a prestigious school. After successfully getting into Tokyo University, one of the best universities in Japan, Shingo immediately drops out as an act of defiance and as a way to take control of his life as an adult. Kazumasa no doubt resents him for this decision. We don't know if they eventually get along better, but with the success of Shingo's online tutoring it is likely that Kazumasa grows to respect his son's work and way of life.
